Evaluating an Email - Legitimate or Phishing?

See some tips below to help evaluate the legitimacy of an email.

NOTE: When evaluating an email for legitimacy, always err on the side of caution.

Steps to take for evaluation:

  • Do not click on any links in an unsolicited email.

  • Carefully examine the sender’s email address, look for spelling or grammatical errors, and hover links to display the full URL before clicking.

  • If you are unsure whether a message is legitimate, contact the sender from a trusted, published phone number to confirm its legitimacy.

  • Red flags to consider are if the sender is asking for personal information such as your username or password.

  • Be cautious with what information you share online as this information may be used to craft messages or guess security answers.

  • After evaluation reach out to your manager or someone within your IT Team if you are still unsure about the email.
